Animals shouldn’t suffer for fashion or homeware. At WTT you can find a curation of clothes, accessories and decoration pieces that use alternative materials to leather, wool and cashmere.
Our selection includes innovative sustainable leathers and peace silk. Recycled cashmere, recycled wool and recycled leather are also part of the materials that respect our animal welfare standards without sacrificing sustainability.
Vegan leather
Real leather involves the abuse and slaughter of animals for their skin. Killing animals for fashion is cruel and something our society should start to reconsider. Moreover, real leather is far from sustainable. Leather has also a high environmental footprint caused by water usage, greenhouse emissions and land deforestation. So, which are the alternatives?
Most faux leathers or vegan leathers are made of PU and PVC, which are not the best option due to their dependence on petroleum and their long-lasting biodegradation. That’s why our selection does not rely on petroleum-based leathers but on other more sustainable materials. In the last years, many innovative solutions have been developed, which are not only vegan but also more eco-friendly than traditional synthetic leather. Some of these are LeQara, Piñatex®, Apple skin, Vegea’s grape leather, Mylo™, Desserto, Nuo, Muskin™, Zoa™, corn leather, Malai, Bananatex® and Reishi™
Recycled leather
By incorporating leather waste into new products, brands are creating leather products without animal suffering and implementing circular, sustainably sound practices.
Other alternatives to leather
Using paper or recycling automotive leftovers for bags and shoes are other ways to create sustainable products that don’t resort to animal exploitation. We also support this kind of innovation and in our product selection you can find all types of accessories that are done using recycled or innovative materials.
Peace silk
For the production of traditional silk, the silkworm is boiled alive. Peace silk or Ahimsa silk, on the other hand, is produced without harming the silkworms. For this, the top of the cocoon is gently cut open to allow the developing moth to escape and to finish its natural lifecycle outside of the cocoon. It is a very peaceful, non-violent way of harvesting silk. At WTT you will only find peace silk clothes.
Recycled wool and cashmere
Natural and biodegradable, wool and cashmere have great properties.
However, the production of virgin wool and cashmere poses many environmental and ethical problems. Even if goats and sheep don’t have to die for the fashion industry to use their hair, the cashmere and wool industries are not free from cruelty to animals. It has been shown that the process of ripping cashmere goats hair and the shearing of sheep for fashion is cruel and violent. Animals are treated carelessly, left with wounds or sewn without any pain relief.
Using pre and post consumer waste such as scraps and discarded clothes is a cruelty free and a sustainable alternative to virgin wool and cashmere.
Walk the Talk is a place for those that won’t compromise their ethics but still want good quality and sustainable accessories in their wardrobes. In our product selection you will find only clothes, bags and shoes made without harming animals and relying on innovation or circularity.
